Delhi Rises to Dangerous Smog After Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the city registered an AQI above 500, which represents ten times the recommended limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that engulfs the capital as the cold season sets in.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city government appealed to the supreme court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Ruling and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, the court approved the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous recording stations throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe measurements recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Implications

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also initiated a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe readings of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Sources

This crisis in the capital is caused by a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Medical and Financial Toll

The economic and health toll on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.

The pollution is projected to be accounting for 10,000 early fatalities annually in the capital.
