Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

Astronaut during spaceflight
Amanda Nguyen, a bioastronautics research scientist, was aboard the New Shepard NS-31 rocket in Spring 2025.

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also featured experts in various fields.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a Amazon founder.
